Fire Safety Checklist
Cooking Safety :
_____ Cooking food is never left unattended while on the stove or in the oven. If you have to
leave the kitchen, set a timer or take something with you such as a spoon to remind you
that the stove or oven is on.
_____ Stove tops and oven are clean of grease and spilt food.
_____ Counters are clean and uncluttered.
_____ Pot holders are within easy reach of the stove.
_____ Pot handles are kept turned inward so they can't be bumped.
Electrical Safety :
_____ Extension cords and multiplug adapters are used as little as possible.
_____ Extension cords are not under rugs, through doorways, or tacked to walls.
_____ Kitchen appliances such as coffee makers, toaster ovens and microwave ovens are
plugged into separate receptacle outlets.
_____ All electrical cords are in good condition, without cracks or frayed areas.
Heating Safety :
_____ All fireplaces are equipped with sturdy metal screens.
_____ All chimneys are checked before each heating season and repairs are made as necessary.
_____ All portable heaters are turned off when you leave or go to bed.
_____ All portable heaters are at least three feet away from anything else that will burn.
_____ Furnace is serviced each year by a professional.
_____ NO propane tanks or gasoline stored inside the home.
Smoke Alarms/General Safety :
_____ Working smoke alarms are installed on the ceiling or high on the wall outside every bedroom.
_____ Batteries are replaced in all smoke alarms at least once a year.
_____ No smoking in bed as a rule in your home.
_____ All lit candles are out before you leave a room or go to bed.
_____ Matches, lighters, and other smoking materials are kept out of reach of children.
_____ All exits in your home clear of clutter.
_____ Your family knows what to do if there is a fire.(Fire escape plan and practice fire drills)
Discussing how to respond to an emergency reduces fear. It is critical that everyone knows what the
smoke alarm sounds like and two ways out of every room. When the smoke alarm sounds, every second counts!
